Our vets have the latest electric dremmel dental rasps to allow efficient, precise and comfortable rasping for our patients. Following a thorough dental examination any work required is performed and after you will be provided with a record of the work performed for your future reference.

Wolf teeth are the small teeth, typically located in front of the upper molar teeth that can sometimes cause discomfort and irritation when bitted. These are either removed routinely as youngsters using sedation and local anaesthetic, or sometimes in older horses if they are fractured or believed to be causing discomfort.

We work closely with many qualified EDTs locally and are happy to work in collaboration, either to facilitate dental treatments with sedation, or through the use of further diagnostics in the form of x rays or oroscopy as required.

Many dental problems are occurring below the level gum line and hence we often use radiography to assess further the structure of the tooth and allow us to assess the need for potential extractions or more advanced treatments such as fillings. These radiographs we can often perform in a yard setting with our fuilly mobile and portable x ray system.

We are very fortunate to work alongside Neil Townsend, a specialist in Equine Dentistry. He comes to our practice on a regular basis to perform more advanced dental treatments and examinations. The services he provides include

– Dental extractions
– Restorative dentistry – fillings for caries
– Diastema widening and management

For the majority of our patients with dental problems we will use an oroscope to assess the mouth and dental structures within it. Essentially an oroscope is a video camera on the end of a metal pipe. This allows us to assess the grinding surface of the tooth to assess for fractures or degeneration of the tooth, as well as assessing the mouth for evidence of thorns, foreign bodies and even growths or soft tissue masses.
